POWER FLYING DIARY

Brighton to Norman's Bay - speed flying.
I had to wait till about 5.30 today before taking
off as it was pretty gusty all day up till then. I planned to fly
to a place out past past Eastbourne called Norman's Bay. I had never
been there but it looked pretty flat on the map so I reckoned that
there would be plenty of landing fields there.
This flight was kind of an experiment. I wanted
to do a downwind dash and just see how fast I could cover the ground
with a tailwind of about 15 mph. The flight was 25 miles in total
and my ground speed was 60 mph with the bar in and about 6,000 revs
on the tach.
I landed in a nice big flat field at Norman's
Bay. The experiment was a success. It showed me that with a nice
tailwind and a bit of speed you can really motor along with the
Wasp/K4 combo. It gives me more ideas for doing fairly big trips
in the future.
The landing field is the big one in the middle of the photo, left
of the road.
